October 26, 2024A fundamental problem for news and the rest of media is that they believe their value resides entirely in their content. In the Gutenberg age, producing content was the privilege of those who controlled publications, theaters, and networks and their means of production, and those who held the ability – the talent, perhaps – to tell stories. Writing was a scarce skill, and content was a scarce output. But no more. Now the world is filled with content – conversation, creativity, comment – from everyone connected to the internet. And next, artificial intelligence will produce no end of text, commodifying content.
